Commemorate Aug. 29 Chicano Moratorium Sat. Aug. 31 On August 29, 1970, 20,000 Chicanos marched through the streets of E.L.A. protesting the Vietnam War and the higher death rate among Chicanos in proportion to other nationalities. At the rally following the march, the people were suddenly attacked by police who beat them with billy clubs and fired bullets and tear gas into the crowd. Three people were killed and many were injured. Among those killed was Ruben Salazar, a well know journalist dedicated to the advancement of the Chicano community.
