Notes:
Based on: David Michelangelo Marble, 1501-1504 Gallery of the Art of Drawing, Florence Visual references to the well-documented torture in the U.S. military prisons of Abu Ghraib in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, include the blindfold, orange prison uniform and Lynndie England. England was a young, uneducated U.S. soldier in Iraq who was scapegoated and sentenced to prison for participating in the Abu Ghraib torture sessions. Included here is a detail from one of the most infamous photographs showing her humiliating an Iraqi prisoner by pointing and laughing at his exposed genitals. The blurring out of David’s genitals, imitates the blurring out of the victims’ genitals in the Abu Ghraib photos as if they were the only obscenity, rather than the torture itself. As photographs documenting even worse tortures are being withheld from the U.S. public, the obscenity is compounded.
