Great Revolutionary Sentiments One of Che Guevara’s most popular statements is that the true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love/que el revolucionario verdadero está guiado por grandes sentimientos de amor. Here, SMEK alters the expression by replacing the word amor/love, with “revolucionario.” The folkloric dancer in the image is also altered with a “calavera” head. In Mexico, the folkloric dance is seen as exploitative tourism. The notion of reimagining and protecting the aesthetics of their culture is important to the artisans of Oaxaca. SMEK is one of the founding members of Arte Jaguar, an art collective that emerged after the establishment of APPO in 2006.
