A State Of Fear Fighting Police Violence in Hackney 7.30pm Thursday November 9th. 1989 The Factory 107 Matthias Road Stoke Newington London N16 Speakers Raju Bhatt: Solicitor Jamie Stewart family Hackney Community Defence Association Suresh Grover: Southall Monitoring Group Plus local campaigns Organised by: Hackney Community Defence Association The Family Centre 50 Rectory Road London N16 Tel. 249 0193 Stoke Newington New Divisional Police Station The old Stoke Newington police station looked like a colonial fortress. The image was matched by the behaviour of the police, who operated as an army of occupation. The new Stoke Newington police station is intended to blend in with the local environ- ment, giving the impression that the police are part of the local community. However, behind the glass facade is a super-fortress with facilities to cope with many more ar- rests. Symbolically, the new station fits the police strategy for the 1990's - an iron fist in a velvet glove.
